The Tyranny of the Urgent

Throughout the day today life will repeatedly ask you a question: What’s important to you? You will answer, not with words, but with actions.

It has to do with priorities. The choices you make throughout the day are the answers to the question. Some of the answers will be small ones and some large ones, but each action you take will be an answer that is most definitive and telling.

I once read a book titled, “The Tyranny of the Urgent.” It made the point that there are two kinds of priorities: The Urgent and The Important. It is up to us, on a daily basis, to distinguish between the two. Many of the things that pressure us to ‘act now!’ really aren’t the important things in life and the important things seldom have a deadline.

Decide what is important in your life. Take care of those things first. The urgent can wait (or not get done at all).

So many things...only a few things...really only One. {All you need is to choose} (Lk 10:41-42)
