I read a quote a long time ago that has stuck in my little brain and, to an amazing degree, has changed my life. It was said by Abraham Lincoln. Old Abe said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
While I don’t really think that being happy is strictly a matter of the will, most certainly happiness is a result of things that ARE a matter of the will. We can decide to see things in a positive light, to put a positive spin or interpretation on whatever happens. We can find joy and wonder in small thing. We can see possibilities even in adversity. We can search to see the hand of God in whatever happens. We can smile. Those ARE decisional issues and when we decide to approach every aspect of our lives in a positive manner, happiness automatically follows (“happiness” being defined as contentment, well-being, satisfaction).
So be about as happy as you make up your mind to be every day. And make up your mind that you will, indeed, be happy. Make those decisions that make happiness happen.
